
The Chiefs, officers, and members of the Smithtown Fire Department extend their congratulations to Commissioner and Ex-Chief Thomas Buffa for being chosen as the 2024 Commissioner of the Year.
This honor was bestowed by the Suffolk County Fire District Officers Association during their annual installation dinner on Saturday, March 8, 2025. The association is dedicated to the education and training of Fire Commissioners across Suffolk County.
Thomas Buffa has been with the Smithtown Fire Department for 57 years, having joined on September 11, 1967. He began serving our nation in 1970 with the United States Navy. Upon his return, he resumed his dedication to the Department. Thomas was assigned to Engine Company 1 and advanced through the Company ranks to become Captain from April 1978 to April 1979.
Thomas embarked on a new phase of service to the Department after being elected as
Assistant Chief in April 1979, serving until 1985. He was then elected by the members to serve as Chief of Department from April 1985 to April 1987.
Thomas sought to continue his service, leading to his election as Commissioner by the taxpayers of the Smithtown Fire District in December 2000. He remains in this role today, having been reelected last December for a fifth term.
